CLOUD CLIPBOARD
At Microsoft, I contributed to the design of Cloud Clipboard, a feature within Windows that allows users to copy multiple items and access their clipboard history across devices. The goal was to evolve the traditional copy-paste interaction into something more innovative and powerful, while maintaining its intuitive and lightweight nature.
My Role
As part of the Windows Input and Mobile Experiences team, I supported the design of Cloud Clipboard by:
Collaborating with PMs and engineers to define user flows and technical feasibility
Creating wireframes and interaction models for clipboard history, previews, and sync behavior
Designing high-fidelity UI and interactive prototypes for testing
Participating in user studies and incorporating feedback into iterative design cycles
DISCIPLINES: UX / UI / RESEARCH
Problem
Copy and Paste is one of the most frequently used functions in Windows, but it only holds one item at a time. Users often needed to copy multiple elements, especially when working across apps, and were frustrated by the lack of memory, visibility, or cross-device support.
Design Approach
We focused on making the feature powerful for power users while invisible for everyday ones. This meant:
Introducing a familiar interface for clipboard history via a lightweight popover (Win + V)
Designing preview cards for different content types: text, links, and images
Ensuring UI was keyboard-accessible, responsive, and aligned with Fluent design guidelines
Enabling cross-device sync through a Microsoft account, with clear privacy controls
Content explorations
I stress tested for minimum and maximum amount of copy a user would be able to see in the card view
Image explorations
We also tested multiple types of forms of images from light to dark to see how visible text would be on top of the imagery
Empty States
First run experience
For the first run experience I wanted to give the users quick effective messaging so they could understand the benefits of a multi selection copy & paste feature.
Outcome
Cloud Clipboard shipped as part of a major Windows 10 update and was met with positive reception:
Over 90% task success in usability tests during internal beta
Reduced user frustration with lost content by allowing recall of recent items
Helped define patterns later used for other shared experiences across Windows
